Textile Tuesday @The Art Room Dereham

Textile Classes have been going really well especially with the changes in venue since the beginning of the year. The Art Room Dereham has proved itself to be an ideal venue for art and textiles. City and Guilds continue and you can see in the photograph above there are some exciting artwork and samples being made. Textile Thursdays will be in The Cancer Care Centre from March and it is a lovely venue in the centre of Dereham, on Georges Road. Sessions are as normal 10am until 12.15 and 12.30 until 2.45. Look forward to sharing with you shortly.

End of Year Photo 2012

Happy New Year to Everyone.

It has been an amazing creative year for me and many of my students, visitors and friends. This photo was taken by The Dereham Times photographer to celebrate the end of a creative textile year. Just a few of my students who got together to celebrate and share. Sadly it is the end of classes at The Memorial Hall as the Town Council do not wish for there to be an Art Centre at The Memorial Hall. The Gallery will close in February. Everyone is dismayed as it  was a vibrant addition to the new renovated building. I have been teaching @The Gallery for three years and have had so much fun , so it is so sad The Gallery is closing. Thank you to Haydn and Judy and they will be continuing the framing shop and classes at other venues.

My City and Guilds classes will continue at The Memorial Hall until July. I will be moving “Textile Tuesday”from the 8th of January2013, to “The Art Room” along with Thursdays Patchwork and Quilting and Wednesday Evening classes there too. The Art Room, set up by Claire Francis Smith a Painter, Artist and Tutor, who also ran classes @The Gallery . Claire has opened up an Art Studio, a classroom purposely for Art and Textiles. It has the atmosphere of an Artist Studio and she has been creatively teaching and demonstrating there since November. See her website and work by clicking on the link/name above.

So, New Year, new Venues, new ideas and lots of creativity.It has been a wonderful 2012 of creativity and I am really looking forward to the creativity this year as there is lots planned. Wood Workshop at Guy Mallinson Crafty Camping

When classes finished in June Stewart and I went down to Dorset to do some Art Camping at Guy Mallinson’s Crafty Camping. This was to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary, ‘Glamping’ in a Yurt for five days and Stewart taking a ‘Pole Lathe Course’ in the woods with seven other course members and the food was wonderful. Myself, I spent three days enjoying taking in the woodland atmosphere by making art in a Bodger’s Shelter opposite a Trout Pond, full size tepee and Woodland Shelter. Magical**** Guy and his team made us so welcome and the holiday was something else. Glamping here is so special, including the tree four poster bed, the round window in the yurt roof, watching lightning storms while in bed! and the willow tree showers, something else. We did leave twice in the five days once for our Lobster Anniversary dinner and a ‘Fossil Walk’ along Lyme Regis beach with Brandon a Geologists who really made it easy to find fossils. Norfolk Open Studios

Open Studio

The signs went up today outside the cottage to advertise Norfolk Open Studios. I will be open from the 26th May until the 10th of June, 10.30 until 5pm daily. The studio is looking very colourful and there is lots of mixed media art on show.

I will demonstrating different techniques everyday.

The event is free and everyone is welcome.

City and Guild Students 2012

City and Guilds Finished Work

Congratulations to the 18 students who completed their City and Guilds Level One Diploma in Patchwork and Quilting or Machine Embroidery with me @The Gallery Dereham.

I feel very proud of all the work they have done and textile journey they have travelled in just eight weeks. The eight weeks was a taster into different techniques, as a taster for the full City and Guilds. This Textile Diploma is worth 4 University Credits and is a lovely introduction into a full Certficate.

Every student made their textile samples and made them into a book. I feel as a tutor that making samples is important to learn techniques but by putting them into a fabric book it makes them into heirlooms and the book can be added to over the years.

I as their Tutor have the task of assessing and marking all their wonderful work. Above you can see the students work laid out on my studio table. It is a busy time for me too as I am preparing for Norfolk Open Studios. My studio will be open from Saturday 26th of May 2012 until Sunday 10th June 2012, from 10.30-5pm.

It was a very busy time  and exciting time at the end of last year with the build up to

Christmas and moving The Gallery to a new modern space.

With the moving to the new building I responded by creating a  new sculpture

‘Jeanetta Sculpiturio’.

I was inspired by the feeling of change,

architecture, the new space before and after,  Venice and one of my students.

I always love September and the start back to new things.

i am now teaching Patchwork and Quilting at Knit Wits in

Dereham, every Thursday, one Wednesday evening and

one Monday a month.

I have throughly enjoyed it so far and Fiona and Bill

have worked so hard in getting the fabric department and

classroom ready.

Quilts for Chernobyl

July has been a busy creative month with Exhibitions, farm and school visits.

Making quilts,cards and felt, among alot of other creations.

The Gallery has been as busy as ever and I am gearing up for

new classes to begin in September.

There is still a week to go with me preparing for a

felting demonstration on the 31st of July at

The Alpaca Farm.

Also teaching @The Gallery and a teaching day in my Studio,

plus group meetings, the last before the Summer Break.

Floral Brick Patterned Quilt

I love making floral quilts in the Summer,

they capture all the elements of an English Garden.

This quilt is 43″ wide and  55″ long.

It is made with Cotton Fabrics including

Sanderson and Liberty Fabrics.

It is machine washable.

Mixed Media Textile Art Book

I have been making a lot of mixed media artwork recently.

On Thursday I had a play in the studio with lots of vintage lace,

textiles and items that I have treasured and collected over the years,

for just that perfect time.

Embellished Flower

I made the papers and with Kim, a Tutor @ The Gallery Dereham

in the morning and then in the afternoon when the class had

finished I manipulated, stitched and beaded

the Embellished Flower above.

I have made many paper flowers over the years using many

different ingredients including papers.

Stained Glass Window Patchwork

Tuesdays @The Gallery Dereham are always busy and I get to tutor students

through many different mixed media techniques.

Carol is making a Stained Glass Patchwork Wall Hanging,

( a form of applique method of patchwork).

I designed the pattern from a photograph Carol gave me of a

picture of a stained glass window.

As you can see she has produced it really well!

She chose to use mainly dyed fabrics to give the effect of the

original blown glass.

I just love it.

The borders are due to go on and the quilting.

The Queen's Royal Dressmaker

Mrs Peggy Umpelby came to or local Embroidery Guild Meeting.

She talked, shared and showed us some of her amazing tambour beaded samples

and work.

She has been part of the Royal Dressmaking Team for over forty years and has

a personal Royal Warrant for her work.

“Mrs. Peggy’ as she is known by many has worked with designers such as,

The Emanuals, Hardy Amies and Catherine Walker to mention a few,

producing amazing beaded creations which many of us have seen

in press photographs.

Mandalas Card Making

I love learning new techniques and this week I went to a card making class with

Kim, a Tutor @ The Gallery Dereham.

Kim demonstrated different techniques and we learnt how stamp,

emboss, cut out and colour our Mandala patterns.

I loved using the shimmer water colour paints and went and

brought myself some so I could continue when the class finished

at lunch time.

This is my second card that I finished that afternoon.

Mandalas aren’t meant to be entirely perfect can you see what is different?

(clue: Look to the edges).

This card gave me the inspiration to make a silk painted wallhanging and

a video step by step
